Lettered jackets
From the first of the pages for 1930 alone from the gallery of over 2,500 Dust Jackets from American and European Books, 1926-1947, Digital Archive of the New York Public Library, which I discovered via this lead from Albert Jay Nock, in Memoirs of a Superfluous Man:
Charles F. Lummis (1859-1928)
Look no more, Uncle Albert. The Wikipedia entry for Lummis is a real eye-opener, as are these links within; Angelenos even have an annual Lummis Day festival:... as far as my reading goes, the clearest and most interesting brief precis of what pure sagacity and pure cleverness have done for mankind is found in the sixth chapter of Mr. Charles F. Lummis's remarkable work called Flowers of Our Lost Romance. This excellent book was published in 1929, so I suppose it has been long out of print, but if one can find a copy of it anywhere it will be worth all the trouble one has had to look for it.
