Anderson Cooper: 'The fact is, I'm gay'

After years of silence on his personal life, the CNN host wants to clear up a "mistaken impression." Email to friend

And don't you know, the good people at Yahoo!, as though they knew I'd want to do so at once, even included an "Email to friend" link on the home-page teaser box ... what's that? It's a reference to an email Cooper sent to his friend Andrew Sullivan? Never mind.

Do Gay Celebrities Have an Obligation to Come Out?

Boldface names like Anderson Cooper often argue that their romantic lives should be private. But does the need for gay role models outweigh that? Read More »

You had me until your final paragraph. To each his own level of publicity tolerance, whether celebrity or "nobody. The "surely every"[one who "comes out" is happier, &c.] assertion assumes a universality of response and an interpersonal omniscience regarding the subjective contents of others' skulls that freezes me to the bone every time I hear it, and is handmaiden to that totalitarian impulse that is but one click of the soul away from the outwardly wholesome and "tolerant" mien of progressivist liberalism. Slapping a default "in the closet" label upon all who have not admitted to same-sex linings up of his libidinal iron filings is an insult, as it is when the target is asexual, or straight and private about it, or simply one who in the privacy of his home confines his sweatier proclivities to streaming video, telephonic self-stokings with another, and considers all such matters none of the business of his friends, colleagues, fans, relatives or loved ones. Why the possession, in our default age of telling all, of a degree of fastidiousness two notches above the mediocre median should be thought "silly" (!) is one of the mysteries of the hour.

After CNN's "Dewey Defeats Truman" gun-jumping last week over the supposed Supreme Court strike-down of the health-insurance mandate (as it were), I was hoping it would be first out the starting gate here, too, with the scroll SULLIVAN: COOPER'S STRAIGHT; MYSTERY DEEPENS; "NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT".

Anyway, screen captures, boyfriend, or it didn't happen.
